"MARRIAGE" In The News (May 2005) |
 |
The news articles and features presented below are simply an indication of how topical, controversial, and all-encompassing the issues surrounding marriage are throughout our society--and the world-- today. Some of the views and opinions expressed, and their respective web sites, do NOT reflect the views or opinions of The Real Proposal™ magazine. Many are highlighted largely to reiterate that the alarming statistical trends on the chaotic state of "Marriage" and "Family"--outlined in "A Mere Glimpse"--will continue unabated without a fundamental grasp and purposeful dissemination of TRUTH on the issues.

After the ceremony, how long should I wait before I make it clear

- Marriage may well need

--Once again,
Donald Trump and I are in disagreement. Recently, on Live With
Regis And Kelly, The Donald boasted that his relationship with his
new bride, Melania, doesn't need any work...Not only that, but I
worry for The Trumpster if that's really the way he feels. This
could be part of the reason why Melania is his third wife. And if
he continues to walk around with that laissez-faire attitude, she
may not be the last. . . . .

Sacrificing Science:
Hardwired for Homosexuality? Breakpoint.org,
By Chuck Colson, May 26, 2005 The
media is trumpeting a new study that seems to suggest that
homosexuality is genetic. But a closer look reveals something quite
different. . . . Now, to put it in lay terms,
this is the “smell test.” Males sniffed women and were attracted,
and vice versa. But gay men were exposed to both types of odors,
and they were aroused by men, not females. . . . .
At this point, what the research
suggests is that human pheromones may indeed exist. But what caused
the preferences—nature or nurture—is not known. You wouldn’t know
that, however, from media accounts. .

As bleak as the statistics sound, divorce rates have actually
declined from their 1981 high, when fully 50 percent of marriages
went bust...Here's the paradox: More than at almost any other time
in human existence, we can reach for happiness in marriage. For
millennia, marriage was about acquiring property, cementing
alliances and consolidating power, great or small. Until the 19th
century, marrying for something as ephemeral as love was seen as
simply absurd. If you found love, great. But that wasn't the point
of the union. . .

Essence of marriage
questioned Dispatch Online- South Africa - May 17,
2005 "We just want that little white piece of paper,"
Marie Fourie said during a break at the Constitutional Court
yesterday, drawing an air square ..."We just want it to be legal,
legal, legal," she told a reporter from the front of the public
gallery where she and Cecilia Bonthuys spent the day listening to
argument over what constituted a marriage. . . .Last year the
Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that the two should be allowed to get
married but they later found that they were unable to register
their Pretoria church wedding at the Department of Home Affairs. .
. . In a separate application yesterday, the couple and an alliance
of gay and lesbian organisations asked that the marriage formula
under the Marriage Act of 1961 be changed to include the words "or
spouse" instead of the current "husband" and "wife". Currently same
sex couples may marry, but the marriage will not be recognised in
law. . . .

- Letter: One year after gay
marriage Concord Journal, MA - May 19,
2005
Gay marriage has
been in place for a year now in Massachusetts. Has this resulted in
any changes in our commonwealth? Consider what...Consider the case
of David Parker who was trying to protect his kindergarten child in
Lexington. All he wanted was to get assurances from the principal
of the school that she would obey Massachusetts law and notify him
if sexual material was going to be presented in his child's class.
He got no answer and was taken to jail for insisting on an answer.
This demonstrates the boldness with which administrators feel they
can operate now in teaching very young children that same-sex
marriage is perfectly normal and
acceptable...

- Arranged versus love marriage
The New
Nation- Bangladesh, By FARIZAA
SABREEN, May 19, 2005
In
the western world people usually choose their own marriage partner
but this is not the way for all cultures living in western society.
Arranged marriages still happen. Often the most important aspect is
the bond between the two families, rather than the relationship
between the couple being married. Property or land with the aim of
securing social status sometimes secures marriage agreements. . . .
Many young people know that one day they will agree to an arranged
marriage. To deny their parents this would be a sign of deep
disrespect. Many families are able to discuss the issue and reach
compromises that are suitable for everyone. . . . In more
traditional arranged marriages (which are still very much alive and
well in Bangladesh) couples may get only one or two meetings before
their wedding day. Though this scenario is common, but some
families disapprove of or forbid dating. They don't want to
introduce their kids to someone to hang out with or move in with;
they want a wedding, and soon. . . . . . Education and exposure to
the media, started to make people to think and realize they need
not be bound by tradition and they can choose their own marital
partners without having to rely on parents, matchmakers, relatives.
This gave rise to love marriages. . . .

Take a few ounces of water. Garnish
with an elegant bottle and a large price tag. Convince Americans
it's cool. Somehow, in the 1990s, a French company called Perrier
did that, and now, America is getting soaked.. . . . . We asked
people to rate the waters bad, average, or great. Many said one of
the waters was bad. Which one? Why, Monsieur, that would be Evian,
the most expensive, which came in last in our unscientific test.
Evian had no comment. The water our testers like most came from
Kmart: American Fare ranked first in our unscientific test, and it
costs a third of what Evian costs. (Maybe that's why "Evian,"
spelled backward, is "naive."). . . .

- Omaha stakes Townhall.com,
By Chuck Colson, May 16, 2006
Last Thursday, a federal judge in Omaha overturned
Nebraska's constitutional amendment that banned same-sex
"marriage." And the press reaction to the story was muted. Why?
Because this decision proves that we and other critics of the
courts and advocates for a constitutional amendment banning
same-sex "marriage" have been right all along. . . . A judge's
willingness to characterize the will of 70 percent of the
electorate as "animus" manifests a contempt for democratic
decision-making. When judges feel free to substitute their opinion
for nearly everybody else?s, only a constitutional amendment will
do. That's the message you need to send to your U.S. representative
and senators. Put this matter beyond the reach of judges whose
animus for the electorate knows no bounds. We need a federal
marriage amendment now. . . .

- Having A
"Weekend Marriage"? CBS News, May 13,
2005
According to veteran couples counselor Mira
Kirshenbaum, 80 percent of all married couples are
living the weekend marriage. "The Weekend Marriage" is also the
title of her book, in which she points out that millions of men and
women enter into a loving and devoted relationship, but because of
their busy lives, they spend most of their time resolving problems.
"Love has a shelf life," Kirshenbaum tells The Early Show co-anchor
Julie Chen. "We wake up early. It's go, go, go all day. At night,
we have chores and responsibilities. "And there's never any time
for falling in love, to do the things we did when we were falling
in love. You turn around and say, 'Where is love?' You keep hoping
you have time on the weekend, but even on the weekend, a lot of
people can't find time. So love becomes an infinitely postponable
option. You can always think that it will be there, but it's not."
But there is hope. . . . .

Parenting
Issues: We can win Townhall.com, By Rebecca
Hagelin, May 13, 2005 After listening to caller
feedback on the scores of radio interviews I’ve done so far on my
new book, I’ve got a renewed passion for my heartfelt message:
Parents can fight the culture -- and win. . . Caller opinion is
astoundingly consistent. Today's parents feel overwhelmed by the
negative messages inundating our kids, and the vast majority of
them are ready to fight back -- but, sadly, many have never learned
how. A recent poll, outlined in a piece by Linda Feldmann in The
Christian Science Monitor reveals the same conclusion I came to
many months ago when I determined it was time to provide practical
help to parents, grandparents, youth pastors and the like --
parents are sick and tired of being sick and tired. Headlined "New
mommy wars: a fight against pop culture's excess," Feldmann begins
her report: "Forget about the 'mommy wars,' in which
stay-at-home mothers were supposedly locking horns with their
working sisters, at least in popular
perception. "What's really happening with American mothers
of all stripes -- from full-time homemakers to full-fledged
workaholics, all income levels, all racial backgrounds -- is worry
about popular culture, and what feels like a tsunami of forces
threatening parents' ability to impart positive values to their
children, according to a new survey of more than 2,000 mothers.
Moms report a cultural onslaught that goes far beyond Hollywood
movies and TV, and into the world of the Internet, electronic
games, and advertising". . . .

- How not to be poor WorldNetDaily, By Walter

Avoiding long-term poverty is not rocket science.
First, graduate from high school. Second, get married before you
have children, and stay married. Third, work at any kind of job,
even one that starts out paying the minimum wage. . . .
A man and his wife, even earning the minimum wage, would
earn $21,000 annually. According to the Bureau of Census, in 2003,
the poverty threshold for one person was $9,393, for a two-person
household it was $12,015, and for a family of four it was $18,810.
Taking a minimum-wage job is no great shakes, but it produces an
income higher than the Bureau of Census' poverty threshold. . .

- The right of rights:
Little girls and abortion Townhall.com, By Chuck Colson, May 9,
2005
If you took your
neighbor's daughter to the mall to have her ears pierced, you could
be arrested. But take her for an abortion and, to some, you’re a
hero. . . . . What's missing
in all of this talk about "decisions" and "compassion" is any
appreciation of the absurdity that underlies the abortion debate.
In any other context, the idea that a 13-year-old has a
constitutional right to choose against her parents' wishes an
invasive surgical procedure, or even consent to one, would be
absurd. Schools need parental permission to dispense
over-the-counter medications. And a 13-year-old can't get her ears
pierced without mom or dad being present. Similarly, an unrelated
adult who took a minor out-of-state for another medical procedure
would be called a "kidnapper"? We'd issue an "Amber Alert," and her
picture would be on CNN and Fox 24/7. Upon apprehension, the adult
would face possible charges of endangering the welfare of a minor
or interference with parental custody...both of these are felonies.
Yet, because the "procedure" in question is abortion, none of this
applies. . . .

Parenting Issues: New ‘mommy wars’: a fight
against pop culture’s excess Christian Science
Monitor, By Linda Feldmann, May 6,
2005 – Forget about the "mommy wars," in which
stay-at-home mothers were supposedly locking horns with their
working sisters, at least in popular perception. What's really
happening with American mothers of all stripes - from full-time
homemakers to full-fledged workaholics, all income levels, all
racial backgrounds - is worry about popular culture, and what feels
like a tsunami of forces threatening parents' ability to impart
positive values to their children, according to a new survey of
more than 2,000 mothers. Moms report a cultural onslaught that goes
far beyond Hollywood movies and TV, and into the world of the
Internet, electronic games, and advertising. . .

Sexual healing World magazine, By Gene Edward Veith, May 7, 2005 Writer Lauren Winner once counted herself among the many evangelicals who approve of premarital sex. Now repentant, she'd offering a roadmap for returning to a biblical sexual ethic. . . . The sexual revolution continues: About 65 percent of American teenagers have sex before they finish high school, and the number of unmarried couples living together has shot up tenfold between 1960 and 2000. Sexual morality has also collapsed among Christians, with one survey finding that two-thirds of single Christians have not practiced chastity. A 2003 study of young people signing abstinence pledges found that, while the vows did postpone sex, 61 percent eventually broke their promises. Of the 39 percent who kept their pledges, 55 percent said they had oral sex, which they didn’t consider to be sex. The problem is not just behavior, but changing beliefs to match behavior. One study of “born again” Christians distinguishes between “nontraditional evangelicals” (who have had a spiritual experience but who are less interested in church and doctrine) and “traditional evangelicals” (who go to church more and have a higher view of Scripture). Among the nontraditionals, 46 percent say there is nothing wrong with premarital sex; 26 percent of traditionals say the same. Meanwhile, 19 percent of nontraditionals and 13 percent of traditionals see no problem with adultery. . . .

- Happy divorce/remarriage/lovechild: what
greetings cards say about the way we live now The
Daily Telegraph-UK, By Julie Henry and Beth
Jones, May 1, 2005
Divorce, remarriage and children born out of
wedlock have become so established in British life that the
country's biggest greeting card retailer has decided to tap into a
potentially lucrative market. Instead of being kept out of
sight as a potential source of embarrassment, the complex
relationships which typify 21st-century families are being
celebrated on cards for children to send their parents on their
wedding day or to stepmothers and fathers on their birthdays. . . .
. The merchandise, which comes from Clinton Cards is a sign of the
times, according to Don Lewin, the company's chairman, who is well
aware of the changed world customers at his 1,200 stores inhabit.
In the past 30 years, the divorce rate has doubled, with more than
154,000 couples separating last year. There are more than two
million couples cohabiting and the proportion of children born out
of wedlock leapt from 14 per cent in 1982 to 41 per cent last year.
The average family - a married couple with 2.4 children - is
becoming a relic. . . .

For Better, For Worse- Marriage means
Something Different Now Washington
Post, By
Stephanie Coontz, May 1, 2005 Thirteen years
ago, Vice President Dan Quayle attacked the producers of TV
sitcom's Murphy Brown for letting her character bear a child out of
wedlock, claiming that the show's failure to defend traditional
family values was encouraging America's youth to abandon marriage.
His speech kicked off more than a decade of outcries against the
"collapse of the family." Today, such attacks have given way to a
kinder, gentler campaign to promote marriage, with billboards
declaring that "Marriage Works" and books making "the case for
marriage." What these campaigns have in common is the idea that
people are willfully refusing to recognize the value of traditional
families and that their behavior will change if we can just
enlighten them. . . . .
